Downlands Artistic follow the basic skills training as defined by the Federation of Artistic Roller Skating (FARS). This is the regulatory body for the sport of artistic skating in the UK.

In addition to this, Downlands Artistic runs its' own First Awards Scheme (based on a training programme originated by Joan Preston).

Basic skills are taught to bring a skater from a wobbly beginner to an accomplished skater, capable of performing many skilful moves. FARS define basic skills that need to be learnt as part of the "Grade" structure.  The details of these are provided on the FARS website here.

When you have passed your Grade 6 you will have learned well over 60 different types of moves on skates, which are required as the basic elements for all competitive skating, both on rollers as well as ice skates all over the world.

Within the artistic dance section, there are many standard dances that are taught and diagrams of these are available to aid training

As part of artistic training and competitive skating, we follow defined dances. A selection of the steps are shown below (provided from various sources).
